Swim Meet 101
Helpful to Bring/Have/Know for Summer Swim Meets
- LOTS and LOTS of Snacks & Drinks in a cooler (kids are constantly eating and water/Gatorade) hydration is very important. There is a concession stand that serves snacks, chips and candy as well as offers either Pizza or Chick-Fil-A
- Sunblock (apply sunscreen after you have written your swimmers events on his/her hand)
- Bug Spray
- Lawn Chairs
- Umbrella(s) or Pop-Up Tent (plenty around, so you can usually share a spot with another family!)
- Extra goggles and swim caps
- Hats for all family members
- Lots of Towels and/or Picnic Blanket
- Favorite, easily portable kids entertainment
- Charged iPhone/iPad/DS
- Board games
- Fan Misters if you want to invest in those, count on being hot!
- A watch is handy so you can keep tabs on how fast the events are running so you will know when your child is swimming. You need to keep an eye on your children so coaches and volunteers don’t have to search for them before a race.
-Check the meet schedule for the warm up times. The meets generally take about 4 hours. If you only have a 6 & under swimmer, you may leave when they are finished swimming. 6 & under events usually finish about 2 hours before the end of the meet. PLEASE check with a Rep. before you leave to make sure your child is not needed to swim in a relay.
Understanding Swimming Terms
DQ: Stands for Disqualification. This is determined by a judge during each event and can result due to a multitude of reason. Really common ones are one hand touches on breast and fly, turning onto their stomach in backstroke, improper kicks or pulling one’s hands past hips in breast. If a swimmer received a DQ, the results will show what DQ they received, if more than one or if walking on the bottom or pulling on the lane rope it will show “Other.” Receiving a DQ for an event will result in your time not being recorded as valid and will prevent a swimmer from being placed. Swimmers entered as exhibition can still be disqualified and a DQ will prevent their time from being recorded.
Exhibition (EXH): Also denoted with an “X” on the results for an event. Exhibition allows swimmers to swim in an event to receive an official time without counting against event maximums. Swimmers cannot enter more than 3 individual events and 2 relays. In order to get an official time on swimmers to better place them in events, and will give swimmers seed times to be used in future meets.
Seed Time: A swimmer’s best official time for an event, used to place swimmers in heats and lanes. Beating this time on the SHARKS will result in swimmers receiving a “speeding ticket” in their award folder that can be used in the end of season raffle. A “NT” seed time for an event designates that a swimmer has yet to swim this event for an official.
NS / SCR: NS Stand for No Show. This occurs when a swimmer or swimmers for relays do not show up for their event. No time is recorded. SCR stands for scratch and means that prior to the even beginning the entry was scratched. Most often this occurs for relays in which a swimmer did not show up to the meet or left early.
Official Time: The time a swimmer received in the meet. This will be saved to calculate future seed times. Official times can only be created during meets and during a team’s time trials prior to the first meet. Official times cannot be created during practice.
